What is social distancing?

Social distancing means avoiding close contact with people who do not live with you. Government guidelines recommend keeping a distance of at least 2 metres away from other people when you are out and about and at work, unless it is not physically possible to do so.

This is because coronavirus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes small droplets – packed with the virus – into the air. These can be breathed in, or transmitted through touch, if you touch a surface they have landed on, then your eyes, nose or mouth.
